I spent my time this week reviewing my completed materials and preparing for the final weeks of my internship. It has given me the opportunity to physically reflect on what I’ve done so far as well as mentally reflect on how this internship has impacted. This was a great opportunity to allow me to prepare for the internship showcase coming up.
I began the week by meeting with my supervisor and discussing the image collection I’ve spent a lot of my summer working on. It was a culmination of two work periods and has been very fulfilling. The most fulfilling part was learning that some of my work has been selected to be used in the final draft of the textbook upon its publication. While I will no longer be a part of the team when the textbook is complete, I will still be given access to view the final project and be able to see an example of my efforts put onto page.
I also spent some time this week reviewing some of the additional materials that go along with the textbook to deepen my understanding of how this textbook will be used in the classroom. There are depths of curriculum that you do not see as a student, especially as an elementary student. The textbook comes with a teacher’s reader and a course of additional materials to support the teacher and further define the curriculum. I was used as a sort of cold-reader to test the material for clarity and efficiency when given to an audience that may not be the most familiar with the original subject matter. As a non-Catholic, I have been helpful in this way because I am not overly familiar with the saints, who are large subject during the Middle ages textbook. I am able to find discrepancies or ask questions that a lifelong Catholic might not notice. This adds to an aspect of this internship which I have enjoyed the most: broadening my perspective in education. It is very fascinating to see how different backgrounds think and learn about different topics and discuss those topics amongst one another. If anything has been the most impactful from my time, it is that.
